I have had the privilege of covering Dirty Honey in Lincoln on two previous occasions. Both times I left the Bourbon Theater thinking that they a pretty darn good rock and roll band. I had the exact same expectation this time around. I was expecting a solid performance by one of the best up and coming bands on the touring circuit. Well…I was wrong. I didn’t get a solid rock and roll performance. What I got was a masterpiece. These guys took it to a whole different level this time around.
Lead Singer Marc Labelle might as well be called Reverend Labelle, because on this night, he took us all to church. It was such a good performance that I would go as far to say that it was the best show I have covered all year. And…I’ve seen some amazing bands this year. But on this night, Dirty Honey was in top form and left the crowd at the Bourbon Theater exhausted and in a happy daze.
Dirty Honey has toured pretty consistently over the past several years and it shows. They are tighter and more at ease with every song. They are currently touring for the release of their new album “Can’t Find the Brakes”. And speaking of the new album, it is absolutely amazing. Might be my favorite of all their releases up to this point. And that says a lot, because I love the debut EP and previous full length album. So many good songs on those releases.
The crowd at the Bourbon was all in from the get go. It’s one of the reasons why this is easily a top a show for me. The crowd, they were loud and into it from the first not till the lights kicked on at the end. The set list had quite a few of new songs thrown in and also many of the previous favorites. The new songs sounded amazing live.
A highlight for me was a stripped down version on the new song “Coming Home” which then was followed by a blue grass version of the Stones classic “Honky Tonk Woman”. That absolutely brought the house down. Throw in the now standard Prince cover and the initial closing set hit “Rolling 7’s”. The crowd was so hyped they added one more song, “Satisfied” off the new release.
It was such a great night, safe to say that if you weren’t there, you missed out.
